How to Generate an App Password in Gmail

When connecting your Gmail account to Outboundry for email warmup or sending, you’ll need to use a secure app password instead of your main Google password. An app password is a unique, 16-digit passcode that allows Outboundry to access your Gmail securely, without exposing your primary credentials. Here’s a step-by-step guide on generating an app password in Gmail.

Step 1: Ensure 2-Step Verification Is Enabled

App passwords can only be generated if 2-Step Verification is enabled on your Google account.

  • Go to your Google Account.

  • Select Security from the left sidebar.

  • Under “How you sign in to Google,” ensure 2-Step Verification is ON. If it’s not, follow the steps to enable it. This will involve verifying your account with your phone or another method.

Step 2: Access App Passwords

Once 2-Step Verification is active:

  • While still in the Security tab, scroll down to “App passwords.”

  • Click this option. Google may prompt you to confirm your account password again for security reasons.

Step 3: Generate Your App Password

  • Under “Select app,” choose Mail.

  • Under “Select device,” choose the appropriate option, e.g., Other (Custom name), then enter a name like “Outboundry” for easy reference.

  • Click Generate.

Google will then display a unique 16-character app password.

Step 4: Copy and Save the App Password

  • Copy the 16-character code displayed on screen. You’ll only see this once—so store it in a safe, secure location or password manager.

  • Do not use this password to log in to Gmail.com; it’s exclusively for connecting third-party apps like Outboundry.

Step 5: Use the App Password in Outboundry

  • Go to Outboundry’s Email Warmup or sender setup area.

  • When asked for your Gmail password, paste your app password in the password field.

  • Save or authenticate your sender account.

Extra Tips and Troubleshooting

  • If you don’t see the App passwords option, double-check that 2-Step Verification is fully enabled and you’re logged into the correct Gmail account.

  • Each app password is app-and-device-specific. If you change devices or apps, you may need to generate a new one.

  • You can revoke (remove) any app password at any time from the App passwords section for added security.

  • Always ensure IMAP is enabled in your Gmail settings for compatibility with email clients.

By following these steps, you’ll create a secure connection between your Gmail and Outboundry, significantly improving the reliability and safety of your outreach activities.
